Review If ever there was proof that not every book should have a trilogy, it's The Death Cure. Sure, The Maze Runner was an interesting concept, but it brought up a lot of questions. None of these questions were answered by the end of the series since most of the focus was on random action sequences rarely driven by the main characters fRfr. Best summary PDF, themes, and quotes. After several weeks, Rat Man comes in and tells Thomas that the Trials are over now, and that WICKED has all the information they need. He takes Thomas to an auditorium, where the remaining subjects of the Trials are gathered. Rat Man, who is really Assistant Director Janson of WICKED, says that they are going to give the subjects their memories back. Janson also tells them that the majority of the Trial subjects are Immune to the Flare, but that a few are not. Included amongst the control variables– those who are not immune–is Newt. Thomas, Minho, and Newt refuse to undergo the memory procedure and are led to another room for solitary confinement. WICKED intends to force the procedure upon them, but Brenda, who is Thomas’s surgery technician, helps them escape. Brenda and Jorge have also been working for WICKED the whole time, but they hate the organization. They are now actually Thomas’s friends, and not just acting the part on behalf of WICKED. Brenda takes Thomas, Minho, and Newt to go find Jorge. Jorge is a pilot, and can fly a Berg out to escape the facilities. The friends manage to escape, but not without encountering WICKED guards. WICKED has a weapon called a Launcher, which electrocutes its victims. Thomas and Brenda are shot with Launchers, but they do manage to escape on the Berg. Thomas is upset to find out that Teresa and the other subjects have also escaped on a Berg he believes that they left Thomas, Minho, and Newt behind. Jorge navigates the Berg to the city of Denver in Colorado. Denver is supposedly a safe city that guards itself against the Flare infection very well. There is also a defected WICKED doctor there, a man named Hans. Brenda believes that Hans can help them remove the chips planted in Thomas, Minho, and Newt’s brains, so that WICKED can no longer control them. When they reach the Denver airport, Newt stays behind because he is not an Immune. At the airport, a man delivers a cryptic note to Thomas. The note is from Gally, who is still alive, much to Thomas’s surprise. Gally is now working for the Right Arm, an organization opposed to WICKED. Before visiting Hans, Thomas and his friends visit Gally. Gally informs them of two key facts. First, Denver has been corrupt for a very long time and is actually heavily infested with the Flare. Second, someone has been kidnapping Immunes. After seeing Gally, Thomas and his friends visit Hans, who manages to remove their WICKED control chips. As they are waiting in a coffee shop after seeing Hans, Flare testers attack a drugged-out infected man. They also capture Thomas, who lingered for too long. Thomas’s captors are bounty hunters, who want to sell him due to his Immune status. WICKED weaponry guns down Thomas’s captors, and Janson appears on a screen, asking Thomas to come back to WICKED. He says Thomas is the Final Candidate’. WICKED is not coming down to Denver because of the crazy infection rates. Thomas’s friends find him again after this encounter with Janson. They head back to the Berg, only to find that Newt is gone he has been taken by other Cranks and is now living with them. Newt’s deterioration due to the Flare is exponential. Thomas and his friends hunt down Newt, who is living at the Crank Palace’, the place where all the infected people are quarantined. Newt, who is already partially insane, tells them to leave him alone. Broken and upset, Thomas and his friends are chased out of the quarantine by other Cranks, just barely making it on board their Berg in time. Jorge flies the Berg back to the Denver entry point, but Flare tester bounty hunters immediately capture them. When Thomas and his friends are taken captive, they find that Teresa, Aris, and other members of their original groups are also prisoners of the bounty hunters. Minho helps overpower guards who come in to give them food. The guards are working for the Right Arm, not for WICKED. Thomas and Brenda insist on talking to the higher-ups of the Right Arm, and are taken through the city to the Right Arm headquarters. There, they meet Gally and the Right Arm’s head, Vince. Vince says that they are running a lookalike operation they will pretend to sell immunes to WICKED and then infiltrate the complex. Thomas agrees to be part of this plan. He will pretend to go back as the Final Candidate’, and will plant a device that will disable WICKED weapons. As they drive back through the city to the Berg that will take Thomas to WICKED, Thomas and the Right Arm personnel encounter Cranks on the street. Thomas sees Newt and tries to save him, but Newt begs for Thomas to kill him instead. Thomas finally respects his friend’s wishes, killing him. Thomas is flown up to WICKED, and pretends to hike back into the facility. Rat Man tells Thomas that they need him to sacrifice himself for science the doctors need to read his brain and use for the cure. Thomas asks for more time, hoping the Right Arm will get here before the fatal surgery. Janson does not give Thomas much time or choice, and is putting him under anesthesia just as the Right Arm does arrive. Thomas goes unconscious from an injection, but wakes up to find a letter from Chancellor Ava Paige, who has a backup plan she asks Thomas to find all the Immunes, who are hidden in the Maze, and take a Flat Trans to a safe place. As Thomas runs out to look for his friends, he realizes that the Right Arm intends only to destroy WICKED. Explosives are going off everywhere. When Thomas finds his friends, he takes them to the Maze to help get the Immunes out and to the Flat Trans. In the process, they have to fight Grievers deployed to kill them. Many people die from explosions and falling debris. Just before Thomas and his friends enter the Flat Trans, Janson and backups arrive to stop them. Thomas and his friends fight them, and Thomas kills Janson. As they prepare to finally enter the Flat Trans, Teresa dives and saves Thomas from a falling piece of ceiling; the ceiling crushes Teresa instead, killing her. Thomas and his friends enter the Flat Trans, arriving in a lush nature hideaway. Brenda disables the Flat Trans and burns the entrance around it. The group prepares to begin life again. A final correspondence from Chancellor Ava Paige reveals that the Chancellor planned this backup plan because she was afraid that a cure would never be found. She thinks that Immunes were the real hope for humanity all along. Her email also reveals that the Flare was actually released as a form of population control by the government. Maze Runner The Death Cure Review Director Wes Ball Writers Noah Oppenheim, Grant Pierce Myers, and Nowlin Rating Pg-13 Release Date January 26, 2018 [MAJOR SPOILERS] What’s this? Maze Runner The Death Cure is apparently the last cinematic movie of a trilogy based on the novels of the same name. The journey began in The Maze Runner, continued with Maze Runner The Scorch Trials, and ends with The Death Cure. Unfortunately, The Death Cure leaves the series falling awfully flat, compared to feelings of intrigue and exuberance left after the first film. The film companies who want to invest in trilogies should just call Matt Reeves. The recent Planet of the Apes trilogy that just wrapped up may be one of the best trilogies in the last decade. But I digress, that’s neither here nor there. We are talking about this unfortunate collapse. So it’s just another bad end to a trilogy? Exactly. This movie plays out so much like a video game it is almost unbearable at times. Almost to the point where I can bring an Xbox controller to the movie theatre and pretend to play along with the actions. I could put my controller down for the intimate cut-scenes and then correctly playing through the Quick Time Events. RIP Spider-Man 3 The Game. The number of cliches in this movie are staggering. “You want us to go in the dark tunnel?” Boss fights in crumbling buildings, mind experimentation, kiss scenes in fiery collapses, fights against friends, the dead coming back to life, a big action set-piece to open the movie, the “last civilization” behind giant walls. If you take a shot for every scene/theme you have seen before in another movie, you will get absolutely inebriated before the halfway point of this 113 minute monster of a film. What’s The Death Cure about? Following the events of the last two films, Thomas, Newt, and I believe Frypan yes, that’s a character’s name are still immune to the virus. The movie begins with a train set piece that was ripped right out of Sam Mendes’ James Bond movie Skyfall, with the three listed above trying to steal a train that is carrying immune children in hopes of finding their kidnapped friend Minho. In the old “switchers” moment, they grab the wrong train, and decide to head to WCKD’s headquarters, the last city on Earth. Along the way they head through dark tunnels filled with cranks and barely escape. Just like possibly every zombie movie ever made. The group makes it to the WCKD city and run into a past foe who was thought to be dead, who is now their friend. Cue obvious surprise music. Now they make a deal with Gally’s boss to get inside of the city. They realize that they can use Teresa who betrayed them in The Scorch Trials to get inside of the main building to save Minho. What happens after that? What follows is a nearly 90-minute set-piece to set-up for an action-adventure ending. Thomas, Newt, and Gally work with Teresa to release the rest of the immune children WCKD is holding, find Minho, only to realize that Thomas’ blood is the only thing that can cure the crank virus. Yeah I know, even you saw that coming and you probably haven’t seen the movie yet. Outside of the walls, Gally’s leader uses the information supplied by Thomas and his friends to “storm the castle of the rich,” and effectively lead a revolution against WCKD. The ending scene of the revolution rushing in the walls is the best storyline in the movie. Not much time is spent on it. As Thomas and his friends try to escape, one of his friends reveals he’s been bitten shocker and must fend off the virus before he attacks Thomas, to no avail. Thomas must mercy-kill one of his closest friends. What about Teresa? Finally, Teresa contacts Thomas to let him know that his blood is the cure and he heads back to try to synthesize a cure. Cue double cross plot device as Janson is there to capture Thomas and reveals that the virus is turning him into a crank. He needs Thomas’ blood. The revolution starts destroying buildings and WCKD’s main building crumbles around them as Thomas fights to get loose and has a boss fight with Janson in the building. The movie ends with Janson dying with the, “You missed your shot kid. No I didn’t.” line and Teresa and Thomas passionately kiss on top of the building with fire burning around them and a hovercraft trying to transport them out. Not even joking. Teresa dies saving Thomas, leaving Thomas and the rest of the “safe haven” community to reflect on the friends they’ve lost. That’s it. Who’s in Maze Runner The Death Cure? Dylan O’ Brien returns as Thomas. Actually most if not all of the cast from the first two movies return for this last one. Which is a good sign. They believed in this trilogy and stuck through it to the end. I’m happy for them. It’s always a good sign whenever Giancarlo Esposito is apart of something. I just wished he had more screen time. But this trilogy is about the teenagers, and the one thing going for this trilogy is the acting of Dylan, Kayla, Dexter, and Ki Hong Lee as the main cast. Other than that, there are no outstanding actors or actresses that many would know. Recommendation? If you have movie pass, or a movie gift card, use it on this movie. This movie’s length works against it and the popcorn you buy will be gone before the good action begins. Honestly, this is a movie you wait for on DVD and add it to your collection to show off the latest 4K HDR Hi-Def, surround sound, etc. type of theatre set up in your home. The action set pieces at the end of this movie, while formulaic, are very fun to watch and view. The special effects are solid and this feels like the end of a trilogy, with a lot of action crammed into the end of the movie. Honestly, that’s the best part, because the story is so bland and formulaic that it forces to the viewer to groan audibly a couple times. This is a movie night movie with your friends at best. I especially enjoy young adult dystopian novels like The Hunger Games. Recently I read The Maze Runner by James Dashner and was hooked – it is an excellent story and as it is a trilogy, I immediately moved on to book two in the series, The Scorch Trials although a worldwide pandemic and extreme weather patterns with scorched earth is very real at the moment. I really enjoyed both books and had to start reading the last in the trilogy – The Death Cure. This is definitely a series that with grab the attention of teenage readers and hold it. As we know from The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials, WICKED were running experiments and testing variables on teenage subjects to try and find a cure for a worldwide disease. But now the trials are over! Thomas and his friends have survived the mystery of the maze with its deadly grievers, endured the Scorch Trials with its insane and hungry cranks think of insane flesh-eating zombies and scorched earth with extreme temperatures and now have one final test, a voluntary test, to complete to help WICKED complete the blueprint for a cure for The Flare, the virus that has caused massive damage to the world population. But there is a problem. Thomas has been getting more of his memory back than WICKED anticipated and he knows that he can’t trust them. The time for lies is over. But the truth is more dangerous than anyone could have imagined. Overall, The Death Cure is a fantastic conclusion to The Maze Runner series. An all-action race to save the world. The Death Cure is an exciting read that concludes the trilogy nicely, although some things are still left unexplained there are two prequel novels to this series, The Kill Order and The Fever Code, that hopefully will explain in more detail about how the Maze, the Creators and the full extent of Thomas and Teresa’s involvement with WICKED and how they came about. The Death Cure sees Thomas reuniting with his friends, old and new, in a post-apocalyptic dystopian sci-fi adventure that sees them taking on the might of WICKED – an organisation backed by world governments that uses people to its own advantage without their consent. Whilst this is a series aimed at young adults, the series does feature a lot of violence, death and themes of horrible conditions and poor treatment imposed on the virus-ridden cranks, with The Death Cure probably featuring the most. I personally would recommend it for readers of 14+. Character development is great, although some might be upset with some of the characters that are killed off, but it stops short of developing the conflicting love interest Thomas has with Teresa and Brenda, which I feel was a good thing as it would have distracted from the story too much. The Maze Runner, for me, was still the best in the series but I did enjoy The Death Cure more than The Scorch Trials – there was more action that didn’t let up and more purpose to Thomas’s actions that was down to WICKED’s actions and goals slowly being revealed over the three books. With some disturbing scenes that quite often feature scary, dangerous and violent situations that might upset younger readers but with plenty of shocks and twists along the way, The Death Cure is an excellent fast-paced, exciting, all-action conclusion to an excellent series that comes full-circle and is a rollercoaster thrill-ride. The Maze Runner series is definitely a series that fans of dystopian sci-fi adventure novels and fans of The Hunger Games will love.
